Making an Impact...Today and Tomorrow
When you make a donation to Bloomington Hospital Foundation, you can rest assured that every dollar counts. In fact, the Foundation raised more than $2.6 in contributions in 2006. To raise this same revenue from a hospital-based service (at a four percent profit margin), would require gross revenue of $65,000,000!
Below, you will find information describing the programs for which the Bloomington Hospital Foundation's dollars were used in 2006. As stewards of your gifts, we will continue making an impact in our community in 2007.
Volunteers in Medicine
The Volunteers in Medicine clinic opened on April 23, 2007. It is owned, operated, and financed by the community as a free clinic for eligible residents of Monroe and Owen counties who do not have health insurance and are not able to pay for health care. The clinic will rely heavily on donated time from both medical and lay volunteers in the community. Bloomington Hospital Foundation is the exclusive fund raising agent for the Volunteers in Medicine.
Hospice and Light Up A Life
Bloomington Hospital Home Health & Hospice, Monroe County's only not-for-profit hospice, has more than 25 years of experience caring for individuals with a life-limiting illness in south central Indiana. A community tradition for more than 20 years, the annual Light Up A Life campaign helps support patient care and bereavement services throughout south central Indiana. The campaign kicks off each year with the lighting of the hospice community Christmas tree on Bloomington's Courthouse Square the day after Thanksgiving. No one seeking hospice care from Bloomington Hospital Home Health & Hospice is turned away because of inability to pay.
Helipad (Emergency Services)
In the summer of 2006, Bloomington Hospital broke ground on a helipad. Having the helipad onsite - rather than at its old location at Landmark and Second - saves crucial minutes for the hospital's most critical patients.
Cancer Care - Hoosiers Outrun Cancer
Nationally, statistics show one in every two people will experience cancer in their lifetime. That means in some way or another, cancer touches us all. That is why the Bloomington Hospital Foundation finds it so important to support cancer care in our community. The 2006 Hoosiers Outrun Cancer event - organized by the Foundation - raised over $160,000 for the Olcott Center for Cancer Education.
Electronic Medical Record Initiative
An electronic medical record (EMR) is a computer-based patient medical record. For example, an EMR can provide easy look up of patient data by clinical staff at any given location, accurate and complete claims processing by insurance companies, building automated checks for drug and allergy interactions, prescriptions. Indiana has been at the forefront of the national movement for EMR connectivity within healthcare. Formed in 2005 by Bloomington Hospital and other medical providers, the Bloomington E-Health Collaborative (BEHC) is a community planning effort focused on coordinating the use of health information technology across a nine-county area of southern Indiana. Bloomington Hospital has committed to upgrading its information technology and supporting the development of the BEHC. The Bloomington Hospital Foundation played a key role in 2006 to secure more than $100,000 in funds to support this important advancement.
Children's Therapy Clinic
Bloomington Hospital's Children's Therapy Clinic offers families of southern Indiana with the most advanced and comprehensive pediatric rehabilitation services. The Bloomington Hospital Foundation is proud to support the Children's Therapy Clinic as they make an impact on the lives of children and families throughout Bloomington and southern Indiana.
Scholarships and Awards
The Bloomington Hospital Foundation supports the continuing education efforts of Bloomington Hospital employees. Each year, approximately $35,000 is awarded to hospital employees in their pursuit of education in their chosen health care field.
Employees in Crisis - The HEART Fund
The HEART (Helping Employees with Assistance in Rough Times) Fund was established several years ago to provide funds and resources to assist employees during extreme misfortune. What makes the fund unique is the fact that Bloomington Hospital employee donations have created and maintained the fund through the annual Employees Who Care campaign. Assistance in 2006 ranged from providing temporary shelter for an employee who experienced a fire at their home to assistance with travel costs related to attending an out-of-town funeral of a family member.
